Borneo - Something different!

If you are looking for something different for your next Winter Sun break, why not have a look at Borneo? Although the flights are quite long, the overall package can be very affordable, and it is certainly a destination to fill your mind with memories.

Flights go to Kota Kinabalu in the North East of the Island. There are many good hotels to stay at, but probably the leading 3 are:

Shangri-La Tanjung Aru - this is quite close to the town, and so well placed for trips out and exploring the local culture of the town

Shangri-La Rasa Ria - this is a bit more remote, but set on a superb beach and with excellent food. It also has an Orang Utan orphanage within the grounds

Nexus Resort - also remote from the town, but on another superb beach. This one features local jungle walks and a full size golf course.

So what are you going to do apart from soak up the sun?

Borneo is probably most famous in the West for the Orang Utans - you can see them both at the Rasa Ria hotel (these tend to be very young ones, too small to be given much freedom) or on a trip to the Sepilok reserve.

Or visit the Iban tribe with their traditional fishing methods

Or the Mulu National Park Caves

If you are fit and adventurous, you might try the trek up Mount Kinabalu.

Or Horse riding on the huge beaches.

Or go on one of the numerous diving trips.

The market in Kota Kinabalu is a fascinating shopping trip, specialising in local products, including shell jewelry and textiles, as well as food

Or see how the other half live with a trip to one of the Water Villages.

All the while you can absorb the tropical experience and try the exotic delicacies of the area.

Flights from the UK are mainly from London Heathrow via Kuala Lumpur (itself and interesting stop-over) and connecting flights from UK regional airports can be arranged.
The hotels are generally on a B&B basis, but local food and drink is very affordable, and it would be a shame to stay in your hotel all the time.
The trips to Sepilok and the Mulu National park require local flights, and so should be booked in advance.

So what are you waiting for?
